Objections to Liver Biopsy

Iron and the Brain

It has been known for years that iron does cross the blood brain barrier where it is needed in trace amounts.  However, recent research has demonstrated that iron can be overloaded in the brain.  Iron in excess is toxic.  The problems that this causes can range from neurological to psychological.  In the latest medical literature the diseases that been associated with an over store of iron are:

                              SIDS
                              Progressive Supernuclear Palsy
                              Parkinson's
                              Multiple Sclerosis - MS
                              ALS
                              Alzheimer's - Dementia
                              Brain Cancer
                              Hallervorden-Spatz Syndrome
                              Depression and Psychological Disorders
                              Organic Brain Disorders - Epilepsy
                              Autism

In some cases excess excess iron might cause or may exacerbate brain problems.  The science is still evolving.  For many of the above diseases the causes is unknown.  It might turn out that many are only symptoms of hemochromatosis.

There are also connections to iron overload with infections and parasites:

                               HIV's Mental Component
                               Cerebral Malaria
                               Liver Pathologies

We invite brain researchers to share with us articles from medical journals and presentations on this subject.  This will add to our on-going research.

We also invite the general public to share with us personal histories of an of iron overload and brain problems.  Of course as always complete confidentiality will be preserved.

If you or a family member has one of the above disorders we urge you to be tested for hemochromatosis.  Hemochromatosis is completely treatable and may halt the progress or even reverse these conditions.
